Cundall has been appointed by Eric Wright Construction to deliver full engineering design services for the £5m Energy Coast University Technical College in Workington, Cumbria.

The two storey building with a floor area of 3,500m2 is designed to be low energy, low maintenance, long life and quick to construct. The building adopts many of the principles developed by Cundall for the Education Funding Agency’s baseline school designs. On the ground floor the rooms have a 3.5m high exposed precast concrete soffit with no down stand edge beams to maximise daylight penetration and  single sided natural ventilation. On the first floor cathedral ceilings with skylights allow natural cross ventilation and daylight to penetrate both sides of the rooms. All classrooms are provided with a mechanical class ventilation unit with heat recovery to provide fresh air in winter.

The building’s finishes are designed for a harsh marine environment, with a combination of slate tiles, eternit cladding and anodised windows. The steel framing, precast floor planks and prefabricated roof and façade elements will allow the highly air tight and insulated building to be constructed quickly to reduce program risk due to inclement weather.
