In preparation for the Ashes 2013 and to cement their status in the international calendar, Durham County Cricket Club’s ground has been redeveloped. 

Cundall has been working with the club since 2008, designing a series of phased developments to increase the permanent seating available as well as extending the main stand to provide enhanced VIP facilities.

The Chester-le-Street ground has had its capacity increased from 11,000 to 17,500. The increase in seating has been achieved by adding another tier to an existing stand, adding a new multi-tiered seating in the main stand and providing a new permanent stand in a location where temporary seating was previously utilised.

The ground was opened in 1991 and achieved Test Match status in 2005. In August 2013, the ground hosted the Ashes for the first time, joining a very selected club in terms of Ashes venues.  With around 80,000 people attending over the five-day test, the Ashes has brought the North East of England a boost for the local economy, with hotels, pubs, restaurants, visitor attractions and traders sharing an estimated £20m injection into the region.

As with most sports grounds, the developments to date have been carried out whilst maintaining the sporting calendar as well as the many other uses for the ground.  Cundall has also contributed to a wider masterplan ground as the Club looks to further enhance and improve their facilities.
