The Earth and Environment School was designed to meet the departments' need for world class teaching and research. The project involved the complete refurbishment of the existing building and the addition of a 4-storey wing, which was designed to minimise carbon and waste. The overall project for refurbishment and new-build achieved a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

The new facilities included: purpose built laboratories, flexible teaching rooms, computing suites and a range of formal and informal meeting spaces, designed to facilitate the sharing of ideas.

In the new-build, a reinforced concrete structure was utilised to provide thermal mass and moderate internal temperatures. In the existing building, solar gain and cooling loads were reduced by upgrading the external facades. Other sustainable features included: rainwater harvesting, natural ventilation and the re-use of earthwork material in the new development.

The building was safely constructed in the centre of the university campus. Parts of the building were constructed over an operational service road, which had to remain open throughout all of the works.
