Cundall was appointed to provide full engineering design services for two sample schools at Dormers Wells and Cardinal Wiseman in the London Borough of Ealing as part of the original £350 million BSF programme.

(a) Dormers Wells was a new-build school for 1,400 students, including a dedicated SEN suite and sound-field systems throughout to support the schools SEN programme. The school was designed to meet the BREEAM 'Very Good' standard and achieve very low carbon emissions of 27 kg CO2/m² per annum by using an integrated low energy design. Biomass boilers and PV panels were used to reduce plant, operating and maintenance costs.

The natural ventilation design incorporates a mixture of manual and automatic opening windows, balancing daylight and solar control, and makes use of the exposed thermal mass of the reinforced concrete flat slabs. ‘Green’ roofs on the three open plan steel framed buildings provide enhanced ecology. A risk-based fire strategy provided a solution that met the high expectations of the stakeholders within the agreed cost plan to deliver a safe and robust solution in an otherwise challenging environment, combining new build and refurbishment.

(b) Cardinal Wiseman was a part-new-build and refurbishment of existing buildings for approximately 1,950 students. We improved the performance of the existing buildings using new lighting, ventilation and reduced carbon emission strategies for the site. The new sealed and mechanically conditioned building separates the main site from the adjoining busy road. The new secure entrance and coach drop-off point was developed by our traffic group, who liaised with the highway authority and managed traffic surveys.

The existing school remained in operation throughout the construction works. Flexible and adaptable teaching spaces were provided, with carefully selected column and wall positions for new build structures. Similarly, economic foundation solutions were utilised as a result of extensive geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigations.
