Cundall's expertise in designing low energy residential buildings helped to achieve a heating energy demand level of 23kWh/m² p.a., even with the extended building form and high degree of glazing. At the same time, a high level of thermal and daylighting comfort was ensured.

The objective for the design of the family house was to meet a number of requirements such as:

  • Refer and approach to Passive House standard in terms of fabric quality and the overall energy consumption
  • Meet Code for Sustainable Homes level 4 requirements
  • Apply controlled natural ventilation for fresh air supply and cooling demand
  • Provide excellent level of daylighting during overcast day
  • Ensure a great degree of glazing on the southern façade facing the garden and nearby forest
  • Ensure high degree of thermal comfort without the use of air conditioning or mechanical ventilation

Our involvement included a number of workshops with the client and architect to discuss the building form, orientation, options for materials and plantroom selections and sizing of all the elements. The following measures were proposed for application in the building:

  • Efficient insulation by limiting air infiltration, minimizing thermal bridges (e.g. insulating all the foundation walls, etc) as well as applying triple glazed windows and thermal insulation to achieve U-value, not exceeding 0.19W/m²K (0.13W/m²K for the roof)
  • For south oriented living space, applying exposed concrete ceiling, cement based plasters, compensating for high proportion of glazing with Passive House compliant windows, high performance glazing (g value of 0.37), external overhung and natural ventilation with night cooling
  • Optimising the size, properties and location of glazing to ensure uniform and high level of daylighting
  • Natural ventilation via motorised windows controlled in function of indoor temperature and CO2 level, as well as external wind conditions and temperature to optimise the windows openings and provide just enough fresh air for occupants and employ cross ventilation with night cooling during the summer months
