Full engineering design services for a 13,000m² school in Derby, originally as a sample school in the Derby BSF programme but now being constructed as a Design and Build contract for main contractor Balfour Beatty.

At Derby Moor, a part new build, part refurbishment of existing buildings was undertaken over a split level site, improving external site access and circulation. Cundall enhanced the performance and efficiency of existing educational spaces and provided coordinated designs for a new build feature, ‘Learning Barn’, which connects two existing buildings. Through our traffic group’s input, liaison with the highway authority and management of traffic surveys, a new and more secure entrance access will be provided, along with a new coach drop off point. The school remained in operation throughout the construction works.

The site benefits from improved drainage attenuation that was integrated into the proposed landscaping. For all new build structures, we provided flexible teaching spaces (and thus long term adaptability) through our carefully selected column and wall positions. Cundall also provided economic foundation solutions through our management of geotechnical and geo-environmental ground investigations.

To minimise operational costs further, we integrated renewable energy techniques into our designs by the provision of ‘bio-mass’ boilers, passive ventilation strategies, utilising the building’s thermal mass and efficient lighting controls to reduce energy consumption.

The redeveloped school benefits from a cross flow ventilation strategy, delivering fresh air to occupied spaces, with air being extracted via a number of atria roofs. Suspended luminaires with acoustic material and specifically designed acoustic attenuators achieved the school’s acoustic requirements.
