Cundall was appointed to provide building services and sustainable design for the College Francais Bilingue de Londres within Kentish Town, London. The project consisted of the conversion and extension of the vacant Grade II listed Victorian Board School building to create a facility to serve 700 pupils ranging in age from 5 to 15 years old.
The design made use of the existing spaces with significant qualitative improvement throughout to meet modern legislation for schools, including disabled access, means of escape requirements and improving environmental standards and sustainability to attain a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
From the outset, the project placed heavy emphasis on low energy usage making use of an exposed thermal mass inherent to the structure.
A natural ventilation strategy was adopted for the teaching and dining spaces with an air conditioning system installed for the IT Suite and Music Suite.
A number of areas required mechanical ventilation. The operating costs of these systems were minimised by the incorporation of heat recovery devices that extract the waste heat from the exhaust air and preheat the supply air.
Cundall worked with the architect to develop the form of the building to optimise natural ventilation. The dining area on the ground floor utilises cross-flow natural ventilation, while the perimeter rooms utilise single-sided natural ventilation. Cundall's team determined both the location and size of the opening vents for the natural ventilation and informed the choice of new glazing to help limit solar gain.
The engineering services also incorporated low energy design, including:
Full engineering design services for two sample schools at Dormers Wells and Cardinal Wiseman in the London Borough of Ealing. Only the two samples schools are being built, as part of the original £350million BSF programme.
The John F Kennedy School is one of the largest Catholic schools in Hertfordshire.
