A major redevelopment which saw the extension of the existing centre to the south over three levels with the creation of a new retail arcade, to increasing the GLA from 40,000m2 to over 90,000m2. Cundall provided ESD consulting, focusing on the public realm, sunlight analysis, thermal comfort and energy modelling.
The key sustainability initiatives include the installation of a gas fired co-generation plant for the production of electricity for use by new retailers and for use in air-conditioning the centre. A black water treatment plant reuses waste water for all applications other than potable use.
A solar thermal cooling plant has been implemented at Charlestown Square. Located on the roof, the solar thermal technology incorporates the use of the sun to heat panels. The heat energy captured within the panels is readily converted for use in heating applications such as hot water units, or directed via absorption chillers for cold water applications.
