This £5.5 million, 1645m² project provides new sports facilities and sixth form accommodation in modern brick-built buildings that overlook north London from the school’s campus at the top of Highgate Hill.
The designs for the leading independent day school will add three new buildings to the school’s estate, improving the sports, performing arts and sixth form facilities whilst remaining sensitive to, and building upon, its rich architectural and educational heritage.
A new four badminton court sports hall sits below two of the three roof ridges, creating high quality indoor sports facilities for badminton, hockey, netball and cricket as well as a fitness suite, changing rooms and teaching rooms. The new sports hall at Channing School now provides first class teaching facilities, adding to the schools diversity in physical education.
Our role included strategy, design and monitoring of the installation. The design scope included integration of the new buildings with the existing data network, new physical IT rooms, structured cabling, data networking switching, Wi-Fi, audio visual and CCTV.
The performing arts building incorporates a drama studio and lecture room, green room and stage. Audio visual installations include projection, digital signage, interactive screens and TV distribution.
The sports hall includes an audio system with fixed and wireless inputs and a sports electronic score board. Benefits are, fit for purpose IT and AV installations, that are economic to maintain. Clear specification leading to integrated design, cost certainty and stakeholder design.
Exposing of the concrete soffits to enhance comfort generated challenges in terms of integrating services sympathetically with the architecture. Both the sport shall and the 6th form block were designed to be naturally ventilated according to the latest EFA standards.
