Bryanston School is located on private grounds in Dorset. It is due to the sensitive nature of the landscape that both the client and the design team worked to create a sustainable site. The new building contains five physics teaching laboratories, five biology teaching laboratories, seven mathematics classrooms and a new 150-seat lecture theatre.

Cundall used passive design techniques and ventilation stacks in classrooms to achieve cross-flow ventilation. On hot days the classrooms are cooled naturally by a combination of the exposed concrete soffit absorbing the heat gains and the air circulating via open windows and stacks. As the outside temperature drops, the concrete soffit is allowed to cool and air circulates via the windows and stacks. The benefit of this natural ventilation system is that air and natural light can penetrate the space, creating a stimulating learning environment with good colour rendition.

Further benefits to the client include: lower energy costs, lower maintenance costs (with no associated air handling units and chillers to maintain), a lower carbon footprint and an attractive award-winning building.

  • RIBA Awards (2008), Wessex Award, winner
  • BCSE Awards (2008), Inspiring Design, Best Extension to a Secondary School, winner
