This project encompassed the refurbishment of existing premises at 1 Snowden Street and Broadgate West, now renamed the Broadgate Quarter in the heart of the city.
The refurbishment included a new ground floor entrance hall, ground floor lift lobbies, lift and goods lift passenger cars, office floors and WC’s at levels 8-10 and the new provision of cycle storage, showers and changing facilities at basement level. The office floors were provided with a Cat A installation of services in accordance to BCO guidelines with an allowance for a population of one person per 8m².
A new breakout space and waiting area were also provided within the reception, including a media wall and facilities for diverse events. The primary function of the media wall was to display electronic artwork in the reception area with occasional presentations/functions.
Cundall provided building services and included feasibility studies and detailed surveys of the existing building’s facilities and infrastructure.
The lighting design included the reception, lounge, lift lobbies along with three 30m tall chandeliers which are suspended in the atria. The lighting design in the reception and lounge gives the space a warm and relaxed hotel feel. The design incorporates wall washers for the bronze feature wall, in-ground and ceiling mounted spotlights to graze the etched glass fins, pendant lights over the coffee bar in the lounge and free standing lights in the lounge.
The lighting design and lighting control in the lift lobby is linked to the lift arrival and control system. The lighting which forms a goal post around each lift, fades on and off to indicate which lift will arrive next.
The atria is by far the most impressive element of the lighting design. The atria previously suffered from appearing dark and this affected the occupants of the office as they always felt they were looking into a dark space. The programming of the lights is such that there is a warm sunrise and sunset animation set against of a dark blue to light blue background; a rainfall animation and a fire animation.
Environmental Rating (under BREEAM 2008 – Office v4) assessment) of “Very good” was targeted for the project.
