This new centre in Melbourne’s outer suburbs provides state-of-the-art facilities for children, including maternal and child health, playgroups, pre-schools and occasional care, plus large community spaces.
The client wanted to provide a facility that would significantly improve opportunities for the local community to access children’s services whilst also providing a natural and stimulating environment for children and the public to inhabit.
In addition to the centre’s stimulating and sustainable surrounding landscape the project also adopted a strong climatically responsive design for the building and the spaces within it. This incorporated strong emphasis on maximising access to natural light and the potential to naturally ventilate as part of a mixed mode comfort control, as well as a strong focus on energy efficiency, water conservation and low environmental impact construction materials / finishes.
Cundall provided building services engineering consulting services on the project, along with bespoke lighting solutions to the internal and external spaces for this highly successful project, which was recently shortlisted for the 2015 Australian Sustainability Awards.
The Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, which opened in 2011, is based on ‘state of the art’ ideas developed by the Hospital around a family-centred care model that puts children and their parents at the heart of the facility.
The new community college has the capacity for 420 pupils from early years to secondary.
