The opening of Bournville Place in 2008 has provided Cadburys (Kraft Foods) with an outstanding headquarters workplace facility in the heart of the historic Bournville conservation area.

The project has received National acclaim, winning a number of awards which have included RIBA Award (2009); BCO Midlands and East Anglia, Corporate Workplace, regional winner; Civic Trust Awards (2009), amongst others.

Cundall’s skills and expertise in low energy design together with our recent experience of working on similar heritage office redevelopments were the key reasons for our appointment. Our role was to develop the initial concept design and progress this through to provide a fully detailed and coordinated mechanical, electrical and public health design.

The innovative lighting design and control system has coupled the current best practice solutions to deliver a system with low energy T5 fluorescent lamp sources, DALI dimming facilities, daylight linking and absence detection. Radio frequency wireless switching facilities were used in the building, the first example in a building of this size within the UK.

By closely integrating all disciplines from the outset, the project has successfully turned the constraints associated with retaining an ageing structure into an opportunity for creating an environment where natural light, high ceilings and large floor plates come together to maximize internal well-being and space efficiency.

The Regional BCO Awards judges declared “Bournville Place one of the best projects they had seen in recent years, clearly demonstrating how to convert outmoded space into something new, vibrant and culture challenging.”

In 2011-12 Cundall were approached by Kraft Foods to undertake further work associated with providing revised desk layouts, and additional meeting rooms and toilets, to cater for increased occupancy at this very popular landmark building.
