Cundall were responsible for the civil, structural and transportation consultancy for the development of a new build Booths supermarket in the heart of Penrith town centre in Cumbria. This new food store also includes a café area.

The store also includes numerous ‘green’ features within its design to minimise its impact on the environment, rain water will be collected in underground tanks and used to flush toilets as well as operating washing machines.

The store was constructed on a brown field site previously used as a bus depot, timber yard, HGV garage and carpet warehouse. Site investigations revealed large areas of contamination that had to be treated on site before being removed.

The enhanced shell was handed over to the client within 11 months of Cundall’s involvement.

Cundall were appointed once the scheme had been given full planning permission and given a two month deadline to develop the detailed design to allow for the commencement of foundations. We were able to lead the grid layout proposing the best structural solution to allow for minimal columns in the to 22 meters.

Penrith has in recent years experienced flooding in the town centre and so the surface water discharge for the site had to be restricted to 20% of the original site. Cundall detailed floe controls and attenuation to limit flows during times of storm.

Cundall developed the required highway design for onsite and offsite works, developing a scheme that formed part of the section 278 works between Cumbria Highways and our client.
