The £16 million scheme brings together two existing schools (Springfield and The Elms) to create a single facility for 180 pupils aged 3-19 years.
The pupils range from suffering from autistic spectrum condition (ASC), severe learning difficulties (SLD) to profound multiple learning difficulties (PMLD). The scheme is a PFI funded project with a 22 year concession period.
The school is predominantly single storey with a staff and management suite on a small area of first floor. Accommodation comprises large classrooms, break out spaces, hygiene rooms, food tech rooms, design tech, sports hall, rebound therapy, medical treatment, hydrotherapy and learner pools with associated changing accommodation and central kitchen.
Due to the site's close proximity to a major motorway, the building had to be provided with full mechanical ventilation and comfort cooling via a four pipe fan coil system. The requirement for noise levels is typically 5dBA quieter in schools for pupils with learning difficulties. Fresh air is introduced via air handling units located on first floor open-air plant decks.
There is a high level of internal/ external security and access control systems and CCTV - the entire perimeter of the building is protected by a redwall security detection system that interfaces with the CCTV system. A single eight person lift was provided for access to the first floor.
The steel framed building required close integration with both the mechanical and electrical systems and pupil hoist systems. The location of the building was a challenge for our civil engineers, as a public utility culvert crosses the site.
Bede Academy provides nursery, primary and secondary provision across two sites in Blyth on the Northumberland coast. The new layout is over three storeys in order to minimise take up of valuable site area on this restricted site.
Excelsior Academy is a new-build academy, located in the west end of Newcastle upon Tyne. The academy site was previously local authority housing, recently cleared. This project represents one of the largest Academy projects undertaken in the UK to date.
The new community college has the capacity for 420 pupils from early years to secondary.
