The six-storey Australian Hearing Hub is a new research and learning building on the Macquarie University campus. It features a specialist anechoic (‘no echo’) chamber, a 150-seat lecture theatre and a Magneto Encephalograph (MEG) facility, which required the relocation of two existing MEG machines from within the University and the installation of a third.

The building includes 20,000m² of net lettable space and 2,000m² of shared space, and two levels of basement car parking catering for over 300 vehicles. Other shared facilities include meeting and conference rooms, information technology spaces, teaching rooms, a library and a café.

Cundall provided all ESD services for this new research establishment which achieved a ‘5 Star’ Green Star Office v3 rating (Design & As-Built) and is targeting a 4.5-Star NABERS Energy Base Building Rating.

Key strategies for the Hearing Hub included a Thermal Energy Storage tank, recycled water for toilets and landscape irrigation, effective external shading and efficient building services.
