Antelope House is a new mental health hospital developed to serve South West Hampshire. Antelope House was constructed to cater for day care patients, in patients and outpatients with chronic mental health problems who pose a risk to themselves and others. The project represents the first dedicated adult mental health hospital for the SW Hampshire NHS Trust.
Cundall was appointed to provide the building services engineering on the project. A section of the hospital was dedicated to in-patients who pose risks to themselves and others and need to be accommodated in secure surroundings. Security systems were graded to facilitate varying degrees of access and observation dependant on the requirements of individual patients. While physical segregation of patients is normally provided by use of distinct geographical areas within the facility, a degree of flexibility was designed into the system to permit changes to security requirements at short notice. All systems are unobtrusive, making patients feel less restricted whilst being robust and tamper-proof.
Lighting and environmental systems were designed to provide conditions helpful for relaxation, yet to still be capable of remote control when required. The hospital can accommodate up to 200 in-patients and treat up to 300 day and outpatients. Staff/ patient/ visitor areas were provided on an open plan footplate to encourage social interaction where this is considered appropriate.
Cleadon Park is a development that houses a doctor’s surgery with minor operations facilities together with a library and community facility. The building is naturally ventilated and achieved a NEAT 'Excellent' rating for sustainability.
In March 2010 Cundall, Avanti Architects and Kennedy FitzGerald Architects handed over a new health and care centre in Portadown, Northern Ireland.
