Cundall has been engaged by Sir Robert McAlpine to provide design delivery services for a new 20,000m2 state-of-the-art paint production facility.

The plant will produce famous brands like Dulux and become the new home to the company’s UK Decorative Paints operations. Alongside the production facility and administration offices, AkzoNobel is creating a visitor centre from where they will conduct tours of the operational facility.

The facility will include significant sustainability measures including:

  • Rainwater collection from all roofs to be used in the paint production process
  • 1,200m2 photovoltaic systems installed on main roof
  • 70% of all heat requirements produced by biomass boiler plant
  • Domestic hot water produced by solar hot water panels
  • Use of air source heat pumps


These measures will provide 18% of the plants energy via low and zero carbon sources resulting in a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions and gas and guide electronic use.

Cundall was selected by McAlpine to provide design services because of the extensive experience we have in 3D design using Revit and its integration / coordination in Building Information Modelling (BIM).

This has allowed full integration of the building, M&E installations and the production process. Cundall has been responsible for providing an integrated model to include all MEP contractors working models in Revit and further integrating this with the project process services information.

The engineering services design has included site, infrastructure, and external services and in addition to normal MEP services it has included compressed air, cooling water and ventilation for the production areas.

As part of our duties we have provided a part-time resident engineer on site to manage and coordinate the sub-contractors production of working drawings, up-dating of the Revit model and the coordination of the installation with the process installation.
