Cundall is delighted that three of their projects from the West Midlands were successful at the British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards, Midlands and Central England region awards lunch.
‘Fit Out of Workplace’ category was awarded to Energy Systems Catapult, for their new office in 19 Priory Queensway, Birmingham. Cundall provided building services engineering to the hub which opened late 2016. Relocating was a major step forward for the Energy Systems Catapult which recently unveiled its five-year delivery plan.
The Catapult has been set up to take a whole systems approach to the challenge of transforming the UK’s energy sector both affordably and securely, and is also helping the UK capture commercial opportunities and create new businesses across the energy sector. The Catapult is based on the seventh floor of Cannon House and sees the office as an energy industry hub to facilitate and enhance innovation, and create new opportunities for growth and collaboration across the industry.
‘Corporate Workplace’ category was awarded to Marston’s House. Cundall provided acoustic design advice for the refurbishment of the headquarter building. In addition to looking at the internal sound insulation and privacy requirements for office and meeting spaces, 3D acoustic modelling was carried out to determine the optimum amount and location of reverberation control materials. The project was made particularly challenging as the central atrium was open to the office areas, and therefore the location of acoustic control was critical in controlling the spill of noise between these areas.
The BCO judging panel agreed that Marston’s House exudes pride and encourages creativity, innovation and a new modern way of working. By utilising and enhancing the original building, the judges said, it was made fit for purpose as home for a forward-thinking pub operator and brewer. The judges also noted that the workspace is a marriage of informal workspaces and meeting areas that encourage agile working with workspaces such as team tables, quiet booths and individual desks. They praised the new atrium and connecting bridges which they said enhance the movement of people between departments and encourage relationships with the wider business.
35 Homer Road, home to National Grid, was also highly commended in the fit-out category. Cundall provided building services.
Belinda Morgan, Partner, commented “It’s great to see a number of projects that Cundall has been involved in achieve recognition at the BCO Awards. It is also very exciting to continue to be part of the growth and improvements happening around our City”
