Planning permission was granted for a significant hybrid application at Workspace Group PLC’s Biscuit Factory in Bermondsey. The site is being developed on the former Peek Frean’s Biscuit Factory, which is the birthplace of the Garibaldi, Custard Cream and Bourbon.
The redevelopment will be transformed into 800 new residential units, 7,500m2 of new commercial spaces and 25,000m2 of retained business space. The development is to be delivered in phases and all commercial development is targeted a BREEAM “Excellent” rating and the residential units will be designed to achieve Code for Sustainable Homes level 4.
Cundall was appointed as multi-disciplinary engineering consultant by Workspace Group PLC alongside the award-winning architecture Allford Hall Monaghan Morris in the planning application process. Cundall provided building services, civil and structural engineering, geotechnical and geoenvironmental, sustainable design, acoustics, fire engineering, waste management and vertical transportation engineering to assist Workspace Group PLC to obtain the planning permission.
The development will provide Southwark with a major mixed use scheme and its largest hub for small businesses. This business element is expected to support over 2,000 jobs.
