LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020: Cundall’s Lower Mountjoy awarded Best Public Service or Educational Building

16 October 2020

The Lower Mountjoy Teaching and Learning Centre at Durham University has been named as Best Public Service or Educational Building in the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Northern Building Excellence Awards 2020.

The award is specific to the new build at Durham University and particularly appreciated the impact it had on the local community, public usability, quality project management and how the design supports the educational purpose of the building.

Delivered by Cundall and Space Architects alongside Galliford Try, the £40m, 8,300m2 educational facility was completed in time for the 2019-2020 academic year and has a focus on cutting-edge learning technology. It comprises 450 new study spaces, lecture theatres, flexible and innovative teaching rooms, student learning zones, a café, and education laboratories where new teaching and training methods will be developed. The open-plan design features a view of the Durham World Heritage Site and will also allow the facility to host major academic conferences.

Cundall’s services for the project included building services, sustainable design, fire engineering and acoustic design, as well as civil and structural engineering. The key structural deliverables of the project included design of the building, ancillary structures and retaining walls.

Durham University’s environmental philosophy was key to the design and execution of the project. This required the buildings to be as naturally ventilated as possible, however the deep-plan building layout including areas of high occupation and IT density, required the use of mixed mode natural and controlled ventilation that ensures comfortable conditions can be achieved year round.

Commenting on the successfully delivered project, Paul Hards, Structural Engineering Partner at Cundall said:

‘’This project was an invaluable experience and it is great to look back on our involvement in this landmark project for Durham University. We have successfully designed and executed a cutting-edge educational building whilst being mindful of our sustainability commitments as well as those of the client. My team and I overcame many challenges whilst executing this project and we are more than delighted to hear that the Teaching and Learning Centre won this award.’’

The award is indicative of Cundall’s commitment and dedication to the project.
