Keith Anderson retires after 36 years

UK and Europe 03 August 2020

Keith Anderson, Building Services Partner in the Newcastle office has retired.

Keith Anderson joined Cundall in 1984 as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer to work on the design of a new printing works in Manchester for the Daily Telegraph to deliver the Northern edition in colour, which was the result of new technology sweeping through the printing industry. During his 36 years he has had a significant impact on projects both in the UK and globally.

During his formative years at Cundall he worked on a wide range of projects many of which were technically challenging, with two sectors standing out: Leisure and Manufacturing.

A major proportion of Cundall Newcastle work in the early years was with FaulknerBrown Architects on wet and dry leisure facilities across the UK, Keith designed swimming pools throughout the UK from Jersey to the Shetland Islands.

Keith was also heavily involved with the manufacturing projects arising from the attraction of inward investment from overseas to UK in the 1990s and 2000s.

He also established a working relationship with Ryder Architecture in the late 90’s from which the practices have completed numerous projects together.

Keith also grew Cundall’s reputation with Newcastle and Durham Universities and generally in the Education sector securing some large commissions for prestigious clients. He became a sector lead and worked with all Cundall offices to develop their education experience which resulted in a national presence and advisory role for the Department for Education. This has since expanded internationally and in more recent times, Keith has been involved in the development of similar procurement routes in the Middle East.

He was also responsible for the establishment of Cundall’s Manchester office which was opened when we won Bassettlaw Schools.

Some of Keith’s milestones in these sectors and all aspects of life at Cundall include:
• Philips components at Durham – large production cleanrooms for the manufacture of TV screens (CRT for those of an age to remember this technology).
• Nissan’s European Design and Technical Centre at Cranfield
• Newcastle East Quayside Development.
• Samsung development on Teesside – HQ building and manufacturing facilities
• Several Swimming pools/Community Centres around the Shetland Islands.
• Leading Cundall’s team on Large PFI/PPP schools’ batches including Rotherham Schools with 17 schools in the Batch, Bassettlaw Schools, STaG Schools and many more.
• The indoor powered rowing tank at Durham University for its innovative design.
• Achieving Grade A Engineering status for the Doha office

His impact is much broader than just project delivery having led the Building Services and Education team for over 25 years. He has an excellent grasp of the technical aspects of mechanical engineering and has imparted his knowledge to the next generation of engineers consistently throughout his career.

Tomas Neeson, Managing Partner commented: “Keith has deployed his technical excellence and sharp wit in equal measure consistently in all the years I have known him and worked with him at Cundall. He can sometimes try to hide it, but he really enjoys engineering, solving the problems and challenges and, making it enjoyable for those involved in projects with him. Over his career Keith has been active in supporting the growth of Cundall from a UK based consultant with three offices to the global practice we have today.

We will miss his great range of experience across any project type you could care to mention, and we wish him well in his retirement, which may initially be a little different from what was originally anticipated!"

Everyone at Cundall wishes Keith a long and happy retirement.
