Frasers Property Australia has started construction of what it claims is the world’s most sustainable shopping centre, after receiving planning approval for Burwood Brickworks mall in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
The $115m mall will house a commercially operated urban farm on its roof, recycle rain and waste water and include a 1MW rooftop solar PV array, one of the largest in the country.
The project which is due for completion in 2019 is aiming for 6 Star Green Star Design and As-Built rating as well as Living Building Challenge certification, the first of its kind for retail in Australia.
The mall will include the use of sustainably sourced timber and recycled bricks along with an abundance of internal and external greenery. Up to 99 per cent of construction waste will be repurposed rather than become landfill, and there is a strong focus on local, salvaged and sustainable materials.
“This is definitely a world class sustainable project that Cundall is proud to be part of” explains Andrew Thompson, Associate “It embodies the idea that buildings can positively enhance the environment and people’s health and wellbeing rather than just reducing harm.”
