Durham University project officially opened Share this article

Cundall are delighted to see our multi-disciplinary project officially opened.  Formally known as Durham Gateway, the Palatine Centre, Bill Bryson Library and Durham Law School are a culmination of a four-year major development programme.  

Cundall have worked with architects _space group and PH Partnership, and with Laing O’Rourke as the main contractor to provide a wide range of disciplines including

• Building services
• Civil
• Structural
• BREEAM assessment
• Fire engineering
• Geotechnical
• Lighting design
• Sustainable design
• Transportation

The design of these buildings has seen a number of innovations that have added value to the project, this included our geotechnical and structural engineers identifying a very cost effective foundation solution.  BIM software was utilised by the design team to improve collaboration and integration with architect _space with models being merged on a regular basis to check for coordination issues, including running clash detection analyses. The building achieved a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating which met the University’s high sustainable aspirations.
