Designing our Birmingham office based on the BCO Guide to Specification

Robert van Zyl, Partner, and Peter Grant, Workplace Designer, discuss the complexities and challenges of being both the designer and occupier on a project, in this case, our new Birmingham office.
The project was designed to meet the standards of the BCO Guide to Specification 2014 to achieve best practice for the Birmingham office. Last published in 2009, the latest edition of the BCO Guide to Specification has further developed the recommendations for office developments across the UK. Additions to the guide are sections on building information modelling, rights to light, planning law and party walls. Meeting these standards has enabled us to build an office we are truly proud of and which staff enjoy working in.
Robert commented, "We are delighted with our new office. It has been a key factor in attracting and retaining the best people to work with us. Not only have we become more efficient, but it has helped inspire us to provide even better quality work for our clients".
The Birmingham office has won the Lighting for Building Performance Award at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2015, and the Low Carbon Project of the Year category at the Lighting Design Awards 2015.
Robert and Peter also discuss how staff coped with the change as well as how we integrated easier ways to recycle in the office. To watch the video, click below.
