Cundall was appointed by Durham Country Cricket Club to design a series of phased developments to increase the capacity of the ground and to enhance the VIP facilities in the main stand.
The fourth Ashes test saw England claiming victory on the fourth day at one of the biggest sporting events ever held in the North East.
The newly expanded stadium has not only put North East of England a new place on the international cricket map but has also helped to boost the local economy. With around 80,000 people attending, the fourth test has brought an estimated £20m through hotels, restaurants, shops, cafes and other attractions.
Cundall has been working with the club since 2008 and is delighted to see the success of such a high profile event. Gordon Reid, Structural Partner said, “We are thrilled with the result after years of hard work collaborating with the rest of the design team. North East is the heart of our operation and it’s great to be involved with an international stadium in the region, where visitors from all over the world are coming to experience what a fantastic place this is.”
Cundall provided building services, civil and structural engineering and lighting design for Durham County Cricket Club. The developments to date have been carried out whist maintaining the sports calendar and other uses for the ground.
