The Department for Education alongside the Education Funding Agency (EFA) have released an update for the BB93, Acoustic design of schools: performance standards.
This new document supersedes section 1 of Building Bulletin 93 published in 2003. It sets out minimum performance standards for the acoustics of school buildings, and describes the normal means of demonstrating compliance with the Building Regulations. It also provides guidance in support of the School Premises Regulations (2012) and the Independent School Standards (2013). Please click here to view the new standards.
Andrew Parkin, Acoustic Partner in Birmingham, chaired the Schools Committee of the Association of Noise Consultants (ANC) that were largely responsible for getting the final version of the document written; he has also been a technical advisor for the EFA throughout the review and subsequent re-write process over the last 5 years. Alan Fogarty, Sustainability Partner in our London office, and Robin Pritchett, Principal Engineer, offered advice on thermal comfort issues contained within this document.
“We are delighted that all the hard work involved with this document has paid off. We are looking forward to using it in the new year to advise the designs of new and refurbished education premises”, Andrew Parkin, Acoustic Partner, Birmingham.
