Cundall is delighted to have awarded, for the first time, two "Arkwright Engineering Scholarships".
The Arkwright Scholarships Trust helps to identify and nurture young engineering talent, by supporting sixth form students with an interest in and aptitude for careers in engineering and related areas of design. With the support of individuals, employers and charitable donations, the Trust awards Engineering Scholarships to selected students across the UK to support their A level studies, and to encourage them to pursue their aspirations for the benefit of the UK’s engineering industry.
Before being awarded a scholarship, students are subjected to a a rigorous selection process, which includes a two-hour exam, and a face-to-face interview. As well as academic ability, the assessors look for individuals with the flair and creativity that will enable them to forge careers at the leading edge of engineering.
As well as financial support, the students are provided with mentors from business, who help them to explore their options beyond sixth form, including careers advice and “inside information” on what it’s like to study at university, job hunt and hold down a “real” job. The mentors also help to broaden the students’ knowledge of specific areas of engineering and industry sectors, to help them make informed choices about their future.
The scholarships will be formally awarded to our students on at the IET on 26 October (London) and 2 November (Glasgow). Speakers at the ceremonies will include Sir John Armitt (Chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority), Dervilla Mitchell (Director at Arup) and Professor Peter Grant (Emeritus Regius Professor of Engineering, University of Edinburgh).
