Guest Speaker: White Arkitekter - What did certification ever do for us?, Green Sky Thinking Week, London, 18 May 2017

Alan Fogarty will be talking at the White Arkitekter roundtable event on ‘What did certification ever do for us?’ taking place as part of Green Sky Thinking Week on Thursday 18 May.

Wellbeing is very much in the public consciousness, but how are our increasing concerns for quality of life reflected in built environment standards? BREEAM, LEED and Passivhaus are accepted certifications for measuring the environmental performance and impact of a building, but are they serving us well? The WELL Building Standard™ provides a new tool to shift the focus to the occupant, documenting the impact that design has on the end-users’ physical and emotional wellbeing. Where is this leading us? Are industry measures, ratings and certifications helping to deliver healthier buildings which improve quality of life?

This future-focused roundtable brings together design practitioners and sustainability experts to interrogate existing certification and explore new alternative techniques for evaluating ‘healthy’ buildings.

Alan will be talking about the WELL certification of our London office, One Carter Lane, which is the first project in the Europe to achieve WELL Building Standard™ certification. He will discuss the process, challenges, feedback as well as the costs and benefits of the standard.

The speakers are:

  • Flora Samuel, Professor of Architecture in the Built Environment at the new University of Reading School of Architecture; Chair of the Research and Innovation Group, RIBA
