Cundall and The British Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong organised ‘How Are You Managing Your SMEs’ Environmental, Social and Governance Risks?’ event with the support of Business Environment Council (BEC) on 3 October 2018.
The event was attended by both SMEs and representatives of larger organisations and the presentations highlighted to all that company size should not be a barrier for integrating sustainability into your business. A key element that was highlighted is that the route a SME takes to integrate sustainability needs to add value to the business and ultimately lead to greater business opportunities and growth. Ding Li, highlighted in her presentation the work we are undertaking at Cundall and the importance to prioritise the focus areas of ESG strategies and initiatives and how this is of greater importance to SMEs. She used the example of how Cundall have through experience of our first sustainability strategy discovered to deliver change in SMEs you need to be focused and target efforts to what affects your business.
This was also a theme that continued in the presentation by Simon Leung, of Tung Fat Ho Building Material Limited, who highlighted how working with schools and universities is helping them develop their workforce of the future, therefore future proofing his business. Simon also highlighted the importance of building relationships with larger organisations to ensure they were aware of the changing aspirations of clients in terms of ESG so they can be prepared to deliver these requirements, he used BIM (Building Information Modelling) as a key area for his business.
Victor Li from Dunwell Enviro-Tech highlighted the difficulty for SMEs to introduce new technology into the market and the challenges that can be faced in building a business in the environmental sphere in Hong Kong. He shared the challenges they have faced on their ESG journey but felt that the value added by incorporating ESG into their business had assisted them to grow.
Both Simon and Victor highlighted the importance of industry awards as the main way to promote the ESG work being undertaken in their organisations as they have limited budget to publicise the initiatives they are integrating into their business.
