Guest Speaker: Sustainability in GVC, Hong Kong, 14 November 2018

Amie Shuttleworth, Global Director of Sustainability, spoke at the ‘Sustainability in Global Value Chains’ co-organised by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, the Cologne Institute for Economic Research and Hinrich Foundation on 14 November 2018. This was an international workshop to discuss how sustainability has its impact on global trade and supply-chains and to share best practices amongst companies.

Global Value Chains (GVC) are increasingly emphasised within the world economy. Firms have expanded production chains across broader and more diverse geographical locations. In the past decades, trading in intermediate products has gained importance and today makes up the bulk of world trade.

The reorganisation of production along Global Value Chains is included in the UN Agenda 2030 on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Global and regional trade agreements also provide incentives for sustainable development. Many private corporations nowadays take a series of national and global initiatives to comply with standards in environmental, climate change and social protection. Indeed, many organisations have extensive business strategies to implement risk-based due diligence procedures for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Sustainability programmes in GVC.

Cundall actively engages in embedding sustainability in business, unleashing full potential in creating common wealth for all stakeholders. During the workshop, Amie shared Cundall's corporate strategies on achieving sustainability in value chains and what challenges and opportunities arises.
