Guest Lecture: Mitigating Applicant Risk in the Planning Regime, Newcastle, 6 May 2015

Ian Cansfield, Director of Planning, was the guest speaker at an RICS CPD seminar on 6 of May 2015. He discussed how to mitigate risk throughout the planning process. 

The planning regime has in-built risks and challenges related to the need to satisfy an increasing array of political, procedural and policy requirements. Even experienced applicants can address all the technical issues only to find the decision rejected by the planning committee members, resulting in increased cost and loss of time. In this session, you will learn about the types of risk that exist and how best to deal with them by:

  • Understanding what is required as part of the preparation of a planning application to increase the prospect of success
  • Discussing the importance of an appropriate input into the Local Plan preparation process
  • Gaining insights into the most common reasons why planning submissions fail
  • Understanding how to deal with some of the key areas of risk, such as Section 106, CIL, EIA and viability
