Event: The Circular Economy, Practical Examples from the Built Environment, Hong Kong 8 June 2017

The built environment is responsible for 90% of carbon emissions in Hong Kong and of the 3 landfills we have, construction waste accounts for in excess of 25% of the total waste intake. As we are rapidly running out of landfill and reclamation space, our industry has a responsibility to take a lead by reducing both the amount of waste produced, and by reducing the impact of the materials we use.

In the context of One Planet Living, the circular economy concept is one that we must adopt rapidly to ensure we protect and enhance the natural resources that remain. This challenges the traditional linear ‘extract, make, use and dispose’ concept, to one that is about maintaining goods and services at their ‘highest value’, then recovering and regenerating products.

On the 8th of June 2017, Cundall partnered with the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, to discuss practical case studies from around the world, which provided ideas and inspiration to adopt this new way of thinking into design and construction models, saving money, natural resources and time. The breakfast event attracted over 50 professionals from across the built environment sector to discuss, challenge and identify opportunities using the circular economy model, we were very lucky to have the following speakers who provided their insight how to step down the concept to a practical level:

Amie Shuttleworth, University of Cambridge Institute of Sustainability Leadership Ambassador for Hong Kong and Global Head of Sustainability at Cundall.

Dr Danielle Densley Tingley – Lecturer in Architectural Engineering at The University of Sheffield, she has previously led the work on material efficiency in construction in the UK INDEMAND Centre at the University of Cambridge.

Dr Lee Leston-JonesStructural Partner at Cundall and Structures Futures Committee member for the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE).

Julian Bott - Partner for Asia Pacific at Cundall, Founder of Platinum. Platinum is a not-for-profit organization that serves to Connect, Educate and Support its members in the promotion and development of green buildings for Hong Kong and China.
