Event: Re-thinking Urban Design in Tropical Environments, Singapore, 19 September 2019

The Tropics is the fastest urbanising region globally and is expected to house over 50% of the global population by 2050, with the majority living in its cities. With many of the fastest growing economies, most of the world’s biological and cultural diversity, and ecosystems services of global importance, what’s happening in the world’s tropical zone over the coming decades will have global implications. It’s the region’s new and existing cities that will play a pivotal role in supporting this journey. How will we therefore ensure tropical cities remain liveable and healthy to ensure nations can prosper sustainably?

This event will explore some of the key challenges facing urban liveability, quality of life and health, with a focus on Southeast Asia. The challenges facing the region’s cities – and others in the tropical region globally – will be presented, along with a range of strategies that could help cities both mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. Perspectives covered including architectural design, urban planning, engineering design and climate science.

Speakers:

“Environmental & Engineering Design Solutions for Liveable Tropical Cities”
David Robinson, Senior Sustainability Consultant, Cundall

“Garden City, Megacity: Strategies for 21st Century Cities"
