Seminar: Effective Scheme Design: Ground and Water, Newcastle, 12 March 2015

How ground conditions and water environment can impact and inform scheme design and development.

In this seminar, Jim Allen and Damien Dungworth discussed how ground conditions and the water environment influence the development of a site. They spoke about how site specific ground conditions, flood risk and sustainable drainage can impact scheme design or even feasibility and give examples of why it is better to assess these constraints at an early stage of scheme design.

The seminar covered :

  • Geotechnical constraints and design solutions
  • Land quality (contamination) considerations
  • Flood risk and what you can do to eliminate or mitigate these
  • The SuDS Triangle

Jim leads Cundall’s Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental team which services all Cundall’s UK and overseas offices. He has experience assessing in ground risk across all sectors and has worked on developments ranging from small low rise housing schemes to mixed use high rise inner city projects. Jim has particular expertise in Phase I and II site investigations, mining risk assessments, regulatory liaison and the development and management of remediation schemes for (often heavily industrialised) brownfield sites.

Damien is a Civil Senior Associate with over 20 years experience in infrastructure. He has a broad engineering background with a particular specialism in sustainable drainage systems and flood risk assessments. Damien has lead multi-disciplinary designs on a number of high profile and innovative projects throughout his career.
