Talk & Tour: Breathe Easy, Green Sky Thinking Week, London, 22 April 2015

Every year in April, Cundall attends a variety of the insightful events across London that take place as part of Green Sky Thinking and this year we decided to host our own event – Breathe Easy.

Taking place from the 20-24 April 2015, Green Sky Thinking week is filled with 45+ sustainability-focused events that are moving London’s build environment toward a more sustainable future. The events will focus on three themes: Social Sustainability, Intelligent Design and Green Infrastructure.

This year, Green Sky Thinking is celebrating its fifth year during which it has gained strong momentum within the industry for providing a direct platform for businesses from a variety of sectors to come together and learn from each other.

Our Event - Breathe Easy

Our event was held in conjunction with Justin Bere of bere:architects and Dusty Gedge, Urban Ecologist and President of European Federation of Green Roof Association.

On Wednesday 22 April from 8-10am at the Mildmay Community Centre, Alan Fogarty of Cundall, Justin Bere and Dusty Gedge brought their knowledge and experience on the positive health impact of plants in and on buildings. They considered:

  • How plants in buildings improve air quality; this is on the back of research by Cundall into how common plants have a positive impact on the air quality in spaces when subjected to sufficient levels of daylight
  • Whether plants should be considered to be renewable energy since they can displace some of the energy associated with ventilation systems
  • How green roofs and solar panels can be integrated together. This is increasingly becoming an issue as the two uses compete for the same roof space on city centre buildings

Justin introduced the architecture of Mildmay Community Centre and some of the design challenges to delivering the first certified Passivhaus non-domestic retrofit in UK. This was followed by a tour of the Mildmay Community Centre, where attendees got the chance to question the Architect who worked on the project.
