Who are you & what do you do?
I am Mathuran Marianayagam, Sri Lankan by birth and now Australianised by culture. My background is in electrical engineering but having gained valuable building services and sustainability experience across several countries and continents, I am now a Senior Sustainable Design Consultant in Cundall’s Perth office. My expertise lies in energy modelling, energy monitoring and auditing but I am also a Green Star Accredited Professional (AP) and LEED AP, so I have expertise in the full range of sustainable design.
What or who inspired you to do what you do?
I actually chose to study engineering just because it was a different career path chosen by my siblings. However, I do thoroughly enjoy engineering and when I finished my degree, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to start my career which intertwined sustainability and building services.
What made you decide to join Cundall?
Cundall is known as the best sustainability consultancy in Australia and when I was made aware about an opening to join Cundall’s Perth team to deliver several large-scale projects, I didn’t think twice to hop on the plane from Sydney to Perth. I have no doubt that it was one of the best career decisions I have ever made (so far).
What do you enjoy most about what you do?
The pride and satisfaction that we provide our clients in achieving the best sustainable outcome possible for their projects is what I enjoy the most about this role. As we all know, it is not always easy keeping the client happy but, in the end, it is worthwhile providing good consultancy and earning repeat business.
What are you working on at the moment?
Across Australia, we share work between all offices and get involved in various project types and sizes. My experience means that I can contribute to many project types and ESD related consultancy. Presently, I am involved in the upgrade and refurbishment of four large shopping centres in Perth, a large-scale office building in Canberra, a landmark medical research centre in Adelaide, and many other on-going projects. These projects encompass energy modelling, CFD modelling, Green Star, LEED, WELL and other specialist ESD consultancy.
Tell us the most interesting thing you have learnt or experienced in your time at Cundall
There are many interesting things to choose from during my time at Cundall. However, it is the client-centric approach toward projects and people-centric approach towards employees that are the most interesting things. Cundall has an exceptional reputation with their clients, setting them apart from their competitors and they really know how to look after their staff.
