Junji Zhu

Building Services Engineer

London, United Kingdom

Who are you and what do you do?
I am Junji Zhu and I work in the London office as an Engineer focusing on sustainable design and building services..

What or who inspired you to be an engineer?
I grew up near a big power plant. Both my parents work there (though not as engineers). When I was young, my parents took me to visit the turbo generator plant, the railway for transporting coal, the cooling towers etc., and that gave me my first impression of engineering. Then, at school I was interested in mathematics and physics, and was also a fan of cars. I think engineering is a practice of science, and can provide solutions to create a better world. This is why I studied engineering and now work as an engineer following my graduation.

What made you decide to join Cundall?
I have an undergraduate degree in building service engineering, and master’s degree in building simulation. Building service and sustainable design are two of the main services we provide in the Hong Kong and we work on a lot of fantastic projects.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
Collaboration with different offices on international projects.

Integrated development in different skills: engineering techniques, building simulation (thermal, lighting, natural ventilation)  and project management.

What are you most proud of in your career to-date?
Getting involved in the Hong Kong Children’s Hospital project for the HKBEAM 3rd PA submission. I carried out calculations and simulations for the sustainable design of the project. For the post-occupancy stage, the project achieved the highest Platinum rating in HKBEAM green building assessment system.

Tell us the most interesting thing you have learnt or experienced in your time at Cundall
The most interesting thing I have learnt at Cundall is how to implement what I have learnt at university into real case scenarios. I’ve learnt to provide practical and efficient engineering solutions for clients.
