Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Valentina and I joined Cundall in September 2014 after obtaining my Master’s degree in Power Engineering. I am part of the sustainability team undertaking BREEAM assessments across a variety of sectors such as education, commercial, healthcare, retail and residential.
What or who inspired you to be an engineer?
I don’t think I was actually “inspired” by anyone. I have always wanted to know more about certain subjects so I tried hard to find out more about them. Also, I always remember what one of my high school teachers said to me that, “It would be easier to start in engineering and then switch to something else, rather than the other way around.” He was right!
What made you decide to join Cundall?
I liked that Cundall work on a variety of different projects in different sectors, and also appreciate their values such as keeping sustainability at the core of everything they do. Being a dynamic, internationally recognised organisation that is committed to global expansion through sharing knowledge and technical skills with its offices around the world, and offering growth opportunities in new and emerging markets was key to my decision. At the same time though, it is amazing how Cundall supports employees in their career development through global mobility.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Working for Cundall is a rewarding experience. It has enriched my career path and network by enabling me to interact with a wide range of dynamic professionals. It also the chance to address strategic issues as a team. My involvement on BREEAM projects is to support the design team and to establish locally relevant sustainability expertise. Another thing I enjoy here is the friendly and energetic working environment.
What are you most proud of in your career to-date?
At the end of June I will attend a course to obtain the BREEAM Accredited Professional qualification, ensuring I can facilitate the design team's efforts to successfully schedule activities, set priorities and negotiate the trade-offs required to achieve a target BREEAM rating when the design is formally assessed. After this I will support our teams to deliver their sustainability goals and influence how our projects meet BREEAM targets.
Tell us the most interesting thing you have learnt or experienced in your time at Cundall
Every day working with the sustainability team I have witnessed the importance of a building’s relationship with the environment, and as a team we have to be sufficiently committed, passionate and responsible to meet the client needs. Whilst there have been difficult moments to overcome from time to time, it is the team spirit that has allowed us to get through the hard times and accomplish great things.
