Joanna Goh

Office Manager

Singapore, Singapore

Who are you and what do you do?
I recently joined Cundall Singapore as Office Manager. I’m the only non-engineering person in the office of 10. I have a bachelor’s degree in Law and Human Resource Management and have previously worked in HR, public relations, accounting and office administration.

What or who inspired you to be an engineer?
I fell into this role by accident!  Prior to my first role as an Office Manager, I had always worked in an HR role, and what was meant to be a temp role as someone’s personal assistant (PA) ended up becoming a two year stint as a PA-cum-Office Manager. If you have ever watched the movie “The Devil Wears Prada”, you’ll understand the ‘baptism of fire’ I had that started my career as an Office Manager in the fashion industry. Despite saying that, it was a really good training ground that taught me the characteristics and work ethics needed to succeed in this role: how to juggle, prioritise, be meticulous, to always double-check brand or company standards before sending anything out; and to take ownership of the decisions you make.

What made you decide to join Cundall?
I had a good feeling about the boss and the colleagues that I was going to work for and work with. Generally, Asia is still very far behind in offering flexibility in the workplace, so I am grateful for the flexible hours that allows me to effectively manage my other ‘role’ as a single mom. I like Cundall’s ‘work hard, play hard’ culture; there is a true sense of team spirit and camaraderie in our office, and I was rather thrilled when I realised Cundall ‘walked the talk’ in how they do business when it came to taking environmental impact and sustainability issues into consideration.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
What I love most about the role is that whilst there is a degree of routine to the job, what I do each day is so varied. It’s not strictly administrative, or accounting or HR or marketing. It’s certainly not boring and there’s always plenty to do.

What are you most proud of in your career to-date?
Previously I would have said being an integral part of the team that organised a successful launch party for 2,500 attendees from the fashion industry; and maybe even running a small but profitable one-woman made-to-order cake decorating business from home. But as I’ve settled into this role, I think I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve successfully gotten back into a career after a decade of being a stay-at-home mom.
