Colin Bennett

Associate - Fire

Manchester, United Kingdom

Who are you and what do you do?
I am an Associate in the Fire Engineering team based in the Manchester Office and I am responsible for managing my own projects – from agreeing scope of works and fees; to gaining the necessary approvals from the authorities for our design/fire strategy. With fire engineering also forming part of Cundall specialisms, I work closely with all the offices at Cundall.

What or who inspired you to be an engineer?
I always preferred maths and science at school and this led to me studying Mechanical Engineering at University. I’ve always been curious at finding out and understanding how things work, which is basically what engineering is about.

What made you decide to join Cundall?
I chose to join Cundall because they were setting up a new fire engineering department and it was a chance to be involved in something new from the start. It is also a multi-disciplinary consultancy and I was interested in working along other engineering disciplines, which I believe has helped me become a better fire engineer.

What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy being able to solve  problems and provide  solutions that help the other members of the design team. It is also satisfying when a building has be completed and is in use, so you can see the end product.

What are you most proud of in your career to-date?
Becoming a Chartered Engineer with the Institution of Fire Engineers. It means that you have been recognised by your peers that you are a competent professional engineer.

Tell us the most interesting thing you have learnt or experienced in your time at Cundall
I always find it interesting working on listed and historic buildings as you usually have to get creative when producing the fire strategy for the building.
